The Paediatric Chair

Picture

The Connie Medical Chair provides both rehabilitation and opportunities for play for children aged 8 months to 3.5 years. Designed to be placed into the paediatric cot bed, it comes with an attachable tray, adjustable head rest and four recline positions.  There is currently no model that offers this dual feature that operates from within the medical bed.

The Need

A recent report based on Early Rehabilitation and Mobilisation (ERM) in intensive care for children has identified a shortage or both funding and resources in critical care. The benefits of ERM include :-
  • Reduction in length of ICU stay
  • Improvement in the psychological impact of PICU care
  • Reduction in days requiring mechanical ventilation (MV)
  • Improvement in daily life participation following discharge
  • Improved patient satisfaction

Our Personal Experience

Our daughter Connie was constantly connected to wires, tubes and a ventilator which made it a huge challenge for parents and nursing staff to help her to sit up and engage in play activities. A product that would have done this would have helped with play time, improve muscular, skeletal and respiratory function. There are currently only two options for intensive care - a low tub-like chair and a high-chair. For children in PICU or HDU this chair offers an integrated solution.

Problems with current models

Picture
  • The high-chair is complicated to set up and hard to adjust.
  • External chairs require sorting medical apparatus, feed and drug lines to sufficiently allow transfer of the child. (This can take up to 10 minutes to resolve before porting the child.)
  • It requires 2 nurses and a parent to transfer the child, enduring significant stress in the move, and can take several minutes to install the child into the chair.
  • Sick children have limited up time before further rest is required.

Benefits of our model

Picture
  • The Connie Medical Chair has better management of cables so as not to remove the child from the bed.
  • Easy to set up and install within the bed.
  • Less stress on nurses, parents and team.
  • Meets physio and OT requirements to have children sitting upright quicker after surgery.
  • Enables respiratory function and improves well being.
